On the 12th Blog of Christmas

12 Ideas how to lose the holiday weight you're putting on today (& all month prior to this thanks to the many gluttonous parties!).
  1. Yoga.  If you've read my blog before you know I'm a huge fan of yoga.  It zens you out, stretches your muscles to keep you flexible, burns some calories, and can tone special areas.  My favorite is to hold as many of these moves as possible for 30 seconds.  Some of them are meant to be done on the left & right side, not just one, or meant to be done all at once.
  2. Jumping Jacks.  35,000 jumping jacks alone will burn approximately 1 POUND off.  Yes: POUND.  So, if in addition to watching what you eat & exercising regularly, you do 5,000 jumping jacks a day each week or 1,000 every 12 minutes for the course of an hour workout, you will quickly shed those pounds.
  3. Get some rest, stay stress free.  After the holiday season of eating, take a load off.  Don't give up as much sleep as you did worrying about how the Christmas dinner was going to turn out or if little Suzy would love her new Dooney & Bourke purse.  Get a full 7-9 hours every night.  EVERY NIGHT.  Don't just do this every once in a while and think it'll help, get adequate sleep every night.
  4. Get off your butt.  It's well known that fatty tissue LOVES it when you sit.  More sitting really does move that fat to your tummy and makes it bulge over.  So get up, walk around, stand, lay down... just sit around less.
  5. Water.  Flush out all of those nasty sugars and fats that have gotten in your system!  An all-water or majority-water drink "diet" is great for you.  Stay away from sugary juices and soft drinks for a few weeks after the holidays.  Just think of all that pie and stuffing as a trade-off for soda!
  6. Hardcore stand-alone moves.  From a trainer, here are 4 tough, great moves to quickly get rid of holiday weight.  Trust me though, you'll be putting a lot of sweat and tears into this exercise!
  7. Increase your metabolism.  You'll be eating less than you did on Christmas day, but you still want to burn off more than the fat coming into your body, so increasing your metabolism is a great way.  You can find a few different ways to kickstart/rev up your metabolism from eating when you first wake up, to doing a small exercise set or even just drinking a glass of cold water.  Here's a great workout to wake up your metabolism & do some cardio beside your cardio.
  8. Bikini Workout.  Why not start one right after the holiday season of eating?? This way you guarantee you'll have more time to work on getting bikini ready & attack the fat right away.  Here's a bikini workout to start ASAP.
  9. Find small ways to burn calories throughout your day without working up a sweat
    • Tap your toes while sitting
    • Sit up straight & squeeze your abs or butt
    • 50 calf raises
    • Sit on the edge of your chair, forcing you to sit up straight
    • Walk around at the end of every work hour for 5 minutes or so, don't be so sedentary!
    • Take the stairs instead of the elevator (live/work on a HIGH floor? Take the elevator to a floor closer to your level, then walk the remaining flights up)
  10. 100-calorie workout plans.  These are short bursts of workouts that can be added to your current workout plan or aggregated to form a workout plan, that will burn 100-1,000 calories in one "sitting."  Some examples: The Mover, The Fundamentals, or the Big Burner
  11. Negative Calorie foods.  They're a true gift from God.  These puppies eat out the calories the rest of your menu is piling on!
  12. 54321 workout.  I've found these give you so much motivation as you climb down the minute marker and you can see you're almost done. There are many out there for any type of exercise plan, but the one I've linked to gives options for beginners, intermediate, & advanced routines.

Most importantly,  DO NOT PROCRASTINATE.  Get out there and shed those pounds!!

Happy eating ;)

On the 10th Blog of Christmas

Some great White Elephant/Chinese gift exchange gifts.

Game setup:

  • Everyone brings 1 gift within a certain price range.  Put all of the gifts in a pile
  • Count the number of people at the party & put those numbers on scraps of paper
  • Put the paper scraps in a hat/box/tub
  • Each person at the party will grab a paper scrap with a number.  This is the order you will pick out a gift
Game rules:
  • The first person picks a gift from the pile & unwraps it
  • Now person #2 can either pick a new gift from the pile, or steal the gift person #1 has taken
  • Each gift can be stolen up to 3 times.  After the 3rd steal the gift becomes "frozen" in the hands of the recipient who most recently stole it
  • This goes on until all numbers have a gift.  You can steal from anyone who has picked a gift before your gift has been stolen or your number has its turn
  • When your gift has been stolen you immediately steal someone else's gift OR unwrap a new one from the pile
After my many years of large family gatherings and organization and school parties, I have narrowed down a pretty decent list great for most parties.  And they are....:

  1. The obvious: alcohol.  My extended family loves to thrown in a bottle of cheapish liquor or 6-pack of beer or bottle of wine.  It's almost always a crowd favorite and gets "frozen."  Personally, I would probably buy a little gift basket with glasses or something in it too, just to make it more of a present.
  2. A family-friendly game.  This year, our biggest hit was Catchphrase because our youngest is around 12 so everyone can play after the gift exchange.  Other great ideas include: Millionaire Monopoly, LIFE, puzzles, Mad Gab, & Trivial Pursuit.
  3. The foodie gift basket.  Put together or buy a basket of hot sauces, salsas, cheese and crackers, chocolates, coffee & a mug, or a more novelty food item.  Even bake a pie!
  4. The movie date.  Throw in some popcorn, boxed candy, a bottle of soda, & a couple cheap movies for an easy DIY gathered basket gift.
  5. The gift cards.  Wrap it in a big box so no one is the wiser & make it to a universally liked place. Top ideas include: Starbucks, a VISA giftcard, SIMON malls gift card, fandango, a restaurant chain, Macy's or JCPenney, Target, or a gas station.
  6. The gag gift that isn't inappropriate for youngins (unless this is an all-adult party, know your audience!).
  7. The home decor.  Something that can be decorative in any home.  Examples: picture frames, holiday platters, candles, wall quotes, stationary, floral arrangements...
  8. The good book.  Most everyone enjoys reading, so pick out a unisexual book from a recent best sellers list or an old classic everyone enjoys.
  9. The homeowner gift.  Flashlights, tools, small hardware, Home Depot gift cards.  Anything you can really think of that anyone can use, but typically buys themselves.
  10. The gender-specific gift.  These are great if you're going to a party of predominantly 1 gender.  If it's all girls you can bring a girl gift and they'll love it.  If it's predominantly guys you can bring a guy gift and they'll love it, OR a girl gift and they'll laugh over it or give it to their girlfriends (because they probably forgot to get one for them already...)!

Good luck & happy gifting!!  :)

On the 9th Blog of Christmas

NINE, yes NINE hot drink recipes.
Seriously, there are 9 different ways to spice up cider, coffee, and cocoa for the holidays. Here are my favorites:

   1.  Now this one is listed as a Valentine's day treat, but it's perfect for Christmas too.
White Hot Chocolate & of course I have found a great hot and frozen version of this delicious
         treat!

   2.  Kicked-up Apple Cider!  There are 2 things that you can add (but only 1 or the other, NEVER
        both!).

  • Everclear/Diesel: it's clear, odorless, tasteless, but a SMALL HINT of it mixed in your cider will do the trick & add a little happy to your Christmas party.  Remember though, this stuff is VERY potent & a little will go a looooooooong way!!
  • Apple Brandy: another great additive to kick it up a notch, but stray away from the deep alcoholic taste.
  • Apple cups: Shown below, hollow out an apple & pour the cider right in.  Perfect little touch

   3.  Peppermint Eggnog.  Peppermint- yum. Eggnog- yum. Together: OH YES!! Martha Stewart's
recipes are always amazing & even suggest how much better this eggnog tastes for kids.
ANYONE will love this, kiddos!  This recipe is actually pretty simple too.  If worse comes to
worst, you can just add a touch of peppermint extract & a candy cane stick to store eggnog, but I
bet that won't work near as well, too much cinnamon and custard already added.

   4.  Okay this one I actually stumbled upon & wasn't even looking for... but it sounds DELICIOUS!
They call it a Peppermint Paddy.  Warning, this is an alcoholic beverage!

   5.  My favorite Christmas drink at Starbucks is the Gingerbread latte. And here I've found a
homemade version!  Make the syrup, then the latte.  Only 8 or so ingredients needed!

   6.  Another popular holiday drink at Starbucks is the Cinnamon Dolce Latte.  It's even better poured
        over ice!

   7.  Okay it's not too much of a drink, but I could not leave this out! It's a cute way to dress up a drink
for Christmas parties: Coke Bottle reindeers
    • Peel Off Bottle Wrapper (use a wet wash-cloth for sticky, difficult wrapper parts)
    • Glue on googly eyes from your local Hobby Lobby or Walmart
    • Glue on a little red ball nose also from Hobby Lobby/Walmart
    • Don't forget those pipe-cleaners for antlers at Hobby Lobby/Walmart.
      • Wrap around the bottleneck just below the cap
      • Wrap separate, smaller Pipe Cleaners for the branches of the antlers
So simple & easy & cute!!!

   8.  Salted Caramel Coffee. YUM YUM. You salt any kind of coffee and somehow it's magically
even more delicioso!  Nutmeg Nanny prepared this recipe & it sounds perfecto.  It's listed as a
spiked drink, but you can easily take out the Kahlua and use a non- alcoholic creamer as an
        alternative.  Great for anytime now

   9.  Holiday Cocktail! It's a simple Cranberry Sparkler actually, but it's so red and cheery looking for
the holidays!  It's simply champagne, cranberry juice, & cranberries! yum yum yum! A healthier
        alcoholic alternative!

Happy Drinking!  :)

On the 6th Blog of Christmas

I had a couple ideas to try out for the Christmas season. I tested them, and here they are!
The only real theme here is DIY, so here are your 6 DIY holiday ideas. They'are holiday ideas because most of them can actually be used for any holiday!

   1.   Upcycle used wine bottles. I've chosen to turn my old wine bottles into vases! The first one is
here & done in pink (for Valentines or just for the home):

Modge Podge + Glitter + emptied, cleaned wine bottle
Mix the glitter & glue and paint straight onto the bottle (see: this old post for helpful hints)

   2.   This one is just for Christmas, but you could probably do other shapes for other holidays with this
         same method
This one looks kinda meh, but if you "fluff" it just right, it looks GREAT.
Take about 10 pieces of paper, cut them in the right shape, staple in the middle, then pull around
         the staple.  It's SO EASY!

   3.   Flavorize your cookies! This one is so simple. Buy/make your own sugar cookie dough & buy
flavored M&Ms (mint, coconut, peanut, pretzel, raspberry, etc.)
Um, yum! I pounded some raspberry M&Ms into sugar cookie dough and it really tastes
GREAT!! Additionally, you can theme these for Christmas too! My next thought is to put some
green dye in the sugar cookie dough, then mix in red M&Ms.  Or Vice versa.  Yummy Christmas
delight & a great look for Christmas parties :)

   4.   My Quick & Easy Quiche is a great DIY breakfast or addition to brunch!

   5.  Turn your very cheap coffee filters into a world of snowflakes! It is such a great little touch, or
even a great thing to put in a gift box or bag for a large, themed confetti experience!

   6.   This one I haven't tried, but will ASAP! Make a mini Christmas tree out of CLOTHESPINS!
That's right, that means they can hold lollipops (as shown) or cake pops or toothpicks with
         hotlinks or cheese!

Happy doing it yourself!!      ;)
